Nick Birmelin Bio Percussionist Composer Instructor Musical Director of Grupo Ribeiro
Nick Birmelin is a New York based percussionist, composer and music instructor whose main focus and inspiration comes from music and percussion of Brazil and Cuba. He has performed all over the United States, Brazil, and China. Currently, Nick Birmelin is the musical director of Grupo Ribeiro, as well as a regular percussionist for Brazilian Dance classes at Alvin Ailey. As an instructor he conducts classes and workshops with children and teens in the New York public school system. Currently he is participating in several side projects, playing gigs and working on music for soundtracks.
In 2001 Nick Birmelin received an Artist in Residence Project Grant from the MidAtlantic Grant foundation. He worked in collaboration with the Hoboken Historical Foundation and the musical group “Hippopotamus” and produced a live show and subsequent recording coupled with movies and images entitled, “When Hoboken was Hoboken.” To hear samples of this project click here.
The live multi-media concert at the Maxwells in Hoboken was a great success, a lot of people from the community participated for the free event.
